Franz Friedrich Wallack (born August 24, 1887 in Vienna , † October 31, 1966 in St. Johann im Pongau ) was an Austrian planner and technician.

Life

Wallack is known for the planning and construction of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road between Salzburg and Carinthia , which was built between 1930 and 1935. But he also planned the Gerlos Alpine Road and other mountain roads, cable cars and power plants.

Wallack, who had been a member of the Fatherland Front under Austrofascism , became a member of the National Socialist Motor Corps in the subsequent Nazi era . He also applied for membership in the NSDAP several times , but was turned down because of his Rotary membership.

After the construction was finished, he remained on the board of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG until his death . He was an honorary citizen of the city of Salzburg , as well as other municipalities such as Bruck an der Großglocknerstrasse , Fusch an der Großglocknerstrasse and Heiligenblut , and in 1952 one of the winners of the Karl Renner Prize .

In addition to the Fuscher Lacke , a museum was built in an old road keeper's house, which shows Franz Wallack and his work. In 1977 Wallackgasse in Vienna- Liesing was named after him. The Berggasthof Wallackhaus , located at an altitude of 2304 meters on the Carinthian side on Glocknerstrasse, was named after him.

In addition to the road works by Wallack, the "System Wallack" rotary snow plows developed by him in the early 1950s should also be mentioned, which annually clear the Großglocknerstrasse from snow in April, which at that time often reached a height of eight meters.
