Foundation and development

The choir was founded in November 1945 as the "Choir of the Federal Teachers' Training Institutes". The first appearance under the name "Jung-Wien" took place on October 29, 1946 in the Wiener Konzerthaus . One of the successful concert programs of this choir consisted of folk songs in different languages and was entitled “Voices of the Nations in Songs”. It helped to improve the relationship with the representatives of the occupying powers . The anniversary concert for the 60th anniversary of the choir on October 29, 2006 in the Mozart Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus took up this theme again under the title “Voices of the Nations in Songs - Connecting Europe”.

Under its founder, the choir represented the Republic of Austria at the International Youth Singing in Bern in 1948 . There the choir won first place. Concert tours with the Wiener Symphoniker and the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich to southern France and Monaco followed. A concert tour to the Soviet Union ( Moscow , Minsk , Vilnius and Leningrad ) from October 10th to 28th, 1964 caused a sensation beyond the field of music. This trip had been prepared over several years and took place at the beginning of the relaxation phase after the climax of the cold War , the Cuban Missile Crisis. Shortly after the choir arrived in the Soviet Union, party leader Khrushchev was deposed on October 14, 1964, and further developments seemed uncertain. The concerts of the choir remained unaffected and became great successes.

The choir has undertaken over 60 international tours. Concert tours regularly lead to Germany and the other neighboring countries of Austria. Further trips went, for example, to Riga , Alūksne and Balvi in Latvia in 2006 , to Athens in 2003 , to Thailand in 2002 (with an appearance at a celebration on the occasion of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 75th birthday ), Malaysia , Singapore , 1998 and 2001 to Minsk , In 1994 to Scotland , 1993 and 1988 to the USA , 1992 to the Netherlands , 1984 and 1986 to the GDR , 1976 to Israel , 1975 and 1980 to Romania ( Banat , Transylvania ) and 1962 to Oslo .

Honorary members were the President of the Austrian National Council Leopold Kunschak , Federal Chancellor Leopold Figl and the Mayor of Vienna and later Federal President of Austria Theodor Körner .
