Felix Unger
Felix Unger (born March 2, 1946 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian cardiac surgeon and has been President of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts since March 7, 1990 .
Life
Felix Unger studied medicine at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1971. He began his medical training with cardiology with Fritz Kaindl at the Cardiological University Clinic Vienna. From 1972 he completed a cardiac surgery training with Johann Navratil at the II. Surgical University Clinic Vienna, which he graduated in 1977 with the title of specialist in surgery . In 1978 Unger received his habilitation as a university lecturer. In 1974 he was on study trips to Houston (Denton A. Cooley), Cleveland (Yukihiko Nosé) and Salt Lake City ( Willem Kolff ). In Salt Lake City he invented the ellipsoid heart , which was the first artificial heart in Europe to be used in 1986 in Salzburg, as it has been since 1977 as a form of assisted circulation. From 1978 to 1983 Unger was senior physician at the 1st University Clinic for Surgery in Innsbruck; In 1983 he was appointed associate professor of surgery there. In 1985 he was entrusted with the establishment of cardiac surgery at the Salzburg State Hospitals and was director of the University Clinic for Cardiac Surgery until 2011. In 1990, together with Cardinal Franz König and Nikolaus Lobkowicz , he founded the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg and has been President ever since.
Felix Unger is the author and co-author of around 500 scientific publications, editor of 21 books and holder of 9 patents. He is a member of numerous scientific specialist societies, national, European and international organizations. He also works for the European Commission : "Health is Wealth - Strategic Visions for European Health Care at the Beginning of the 21st Century", Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, 2004, "Health is Wealth - Toward a European Lead Market", VDG , Weimar 2009 and "European curriculum in medicine", VDG, Weimar, 2009.
Felix Unger is married to the artist Monika Fioreschy and they have two sons.
