New York Academy of Sciences

The New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) is a society of around 26,000 scientists from all fields of research in 140 countries.

history

The New York Academy of Sciences was founded in 1817 as The Lyceum of Natural History in the City of New York by the physicist Samuel Latham Mitchill and expanded in 1831 by a foundation from New York University . The academy sees itself as a platform for exchange in the natural, engineering and medical sciences. Since its inception, NYAS has organized many meetings of its members for exchange with other scientists and publishes the results in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences . Young scientists are supported in various programs.

The academy is run by a president and supported by a board of governors . The Chairman of the Board of Governors is John Sexton , President of New York University , and the current President is Ellis Rubinstein.

The President's Council includes Nobel Prize winners Richard Axel , David Baltimore , Paul Berg , Günter Blobel , Sydney Brenner , Michael S. Brown , Linda Buck , Thomas R. Cech , Peter Doherty , Edmond H. Fischer , Joseph L. Goldstein , Paul Greengard , Eric Kandel , Joshua Lederberg , Leon Max Lederman , Roderick MacKinnon , Paul Nurse , Robert C. Richardson , F. Sherwood Rowland , Bengt Samuelsson , Phillip A. Sharp , Harold Varmus , Torsten N. Wiesel and Frank Wilczek as well Peter Gruss , President of the Max Planck Society , and Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker , former President of the German Research Foundation and current Secretary General of the European Research Council .

Known members were Thomas Edison , Thomas Jefferson , James Monroe , Charles Darwin , John James Audubon , Louis Pasteur , Linus Pauling , and Albert Einstein .

Membership is not created through election or appointment, but through a supporting annual fee and any additional donations. But there are also Academy Fellows and Honorary Life Members , each of which is a great honor.

They awarded the Heinz R. Pagels Human Rights of Scientists Award .
