Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker

Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker (born July 26, 1941 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German biochemist and science manager.

Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker is the son of the chemist and former CEO of Hoechst AG Karl Winnacker . He studied chemistry at the ETH Zurich and received his doctorate from the same university in 1968 under Albert Eschenmoser . He then worked as a postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. In 1972 he became an assistant at the Institute for Genetics at the University of Cologne .

In 1977 he became professor of biochemistry at the University of Munich , and in 1980 full professor there. From 1984 to 1997 he was director of the laboratory for molecular biology at the genetic research center of the University of Munich.

His scientific focus is on virus-cell interactions, mechanisms of gene expression in higher cells and prion diseases (including BSE ).

He is a member of the Leopoldina (since 1988) and a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) .

Science manager

From 1987 to 1993 he was Vice President and from 1998 to the end of 2006 President of the German Research Foundation (DFG) . From 1984 to 1992 he was a member of the Bundestag's Enquête Commission on the opportunities and risks of genetic engineering .

From 1992 to 1998 he was chairman of the sponsoring association of the TTN institute (Technology-Theology-Natural Sciences) at the University of Munich .

From 1999 to 2000 he was chairman of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors .

From January 2007 to July 2009 he was the first Secretary General of the newly created European Research Council (ERC European Research Council) in Brussels. He described his “adventure in the Brussels bureaucracy” in 2009 in ZEIT (“Please do not be so suspicious”) and in the book “European research on the move” published in 2012.

Since 2008, Winnacker has been committed to the Tom-Wahlig -Stiftung as a pioneer , which is committed to the research and healing of spastic spinal paralysis .

The organization of the international Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) elected Winnacker as its general secretary in 2009. As of July 1, 2009, he will succeed the former Secretary General, the Nobel Prize winner Torsten Wiesel .

He is also deputy chairman of the Arthur Burkhardt Foundation for the Promotion of Science.
