Peter straw cutter
Peter Strohschneider (born October 3, 1955 in Stuttgart ) is a German Medievalist . From 2006 to 2011 he was Chairman of the Science Council and from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2019, President of the German Research Foundation .
Life
Education
Peter Strohschneider studied German and history from 1975 to 1982 and also law , sociology and political science at the Ludwig Maximilians University , where he was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation from 1977 to 1982 . In Munich he was in 1984 with a thesis titled About talks and dangerousness his doctorate , which he revised in 1986 as Knight romantic Versepik in the late Middle Ages published.
Scientific career
In 1991 , he qualified as a professor in Munich in the subject of German Medieval Studies with the support of a grant from the German Research Foundation . His habilitation thesis alternative storytelling. Interpretations of 'Tristan' and 'Willehalm' sequels as investigations into the history and theory of the court novel was awarded the annual prize of the Ludwig Maximilians University in 1992.
From 1992 to 2002 he was Professor of German Medieval Studies and Early Modern Research at the Technical University of Dresden . As dean (1997–2000) he was involved in setting up the first special research area in the humanities in the new federal states (SFB 537 "Institutionality and Historicity"). In 2001 he was visiting professor at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris . In 2001, he turned down an offer from the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen . In 2002 he was appointed to the chair for German Medieval Studies at the University of Munich. In 2008 he turned down an offer at the Free University of Berlin . In 2011/12 he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies , and in 2012 the first Dagmar Westberg Endowed Professor for the humanities at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .
In 2004 he founded the international doctoral college “Textuality in Pre-Modernity” in the Bavarian Elite Network and headed it until 2006. Since 2005, Peter Strohschneider was a member of the Science Council and from 2006 to 2011 its chairman. In this role he played a key role in the first phase of the Excellence Initiative to promote science and research at German universities.
At the beginning of July 2012, the DFG elected Strohschneider as their next president and successor to Matthias Kleiner . He took office on January 1, 2013 and held it until December 31, 2019.
Awards
In 2010 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .
The Bavarian Academy of Sciences elected Peter Strohschneider as a full member in 2010.
He has been a full member of the Academia Europaea since 2013 .
In 2014 he was elected to the Leopoldina .
The seminar for general rhetoric at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen awarded Strohschneider's speech on science in times of populism at the festive event on July 4, 2017 at the DFG annual meeting in Halle / Saale as “Speech of the Year 2017”.

In the form of a science satire, Strohschneider dealt with the theory of the footnote as it often occurs in scientific publications.
