Karl-Heinz Hoffmann

Karl-Heinz Hoffmann (born July 18, 1939 in Coburg ) is a German mathematician and science manager. He was chairman of the Science Council and from 1998 to 2007 founding director of the Bonn research center caesar . From 2011 to 2016 he was President of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Life

Hoffmann studied mathematics and physics from 1960 to 1965 for teaching at the universities of Marburg and Freiburg . 1966 to 1968 he held a research assistant position at the University of Munich . In 1968 he received his doctorate in mathematics there under Günther Hämmerlin . He then continued to work at the University of Munich: from 1968 as a research assistant, in 1971 his habilitation followed , in the same year he became an academic councilor , in 1972 scientific councilor and professor.

From 1975 to 1981 he was Professor of Mathematics at the Free University of Berlin and from 1981 to 1991 Professor of Mathematics at the University of Augsburg . From 1992 to 2007 he was professor for applied mathematics at the Technical University of Munich .

Hoffmann worked in numerous organizations of scientific self-administration; u. a. He was a member of the Science Council from 1990 to 1996 and its chairman from 1994 to 1996. From 1998 to 1999 he was President of the German Mathematicians Association . From 2011 to 2016 Karl-Heinz Hoffmann was President of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, of which he has been a member since 1997.
