Manfred Prenzel

Manfred Prenzel (born June 11, 1952 in Forchheim ) is a German educational scientist , educational researcher and professor at the Technical University of Munich . From mid-2014 to the beginning of 2017 he was chairman of the Science Council .

After studying pedagogy, psychology and sociology, Prenzel obtained an MA (1976) and a Dr. phil. (1980). As a research assistant at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with Hans Schiefele , he completed his habilitation (pedagogy and educational psychology) in 1987. Until 1993 he was senior assistant at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with Heinz Mandl and then professor for educational psychology at the university Regensburg . Since 1997 he has been working at the Institute for Science Education (IPN) as director of the educational science department and professor for education at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . Since 2000 he has been Managing Director of the Institute for Science Education (IPN).

In 2009 he moved to the Technical University of Munich as the founding dean of the TUM School of Education , which is financed by Susanne Klatten . In 2011, Prenzel became a member of the Science Council , which he chaired on July 1, 2014. His term of office on the Science Council ended in early 2017. Since April 2018, Prenzel has been Professor of Empirical Educational Research relating to Teacher Education at the Institute for Teacher Education at the University of Vienna and Head of the Center for Teacher Education at the University of Vienna.

His research areas are teaching-learning research and educational research , especially the conception of scientific education and the recording of scientific competence , learning motivation and interest, learning transfer and application of knowledge, teaching patterns and learning processes , quality development in mathematics and science teaching, educational monitoring and international school performance comparisons (large-scale assessments or LSA).

Prenzel is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) . In 2017 he received an honorary doctorate from the Leuphana University of Lüneburg .
