Life

Wagner studied mathematics and computer science at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen and graduated in 1983. She then worked until 1988 in Aachen as a research associate of Walter Oberschelp and in 1986 with a dissertation on "The discrete Splitdekomposition as a method for decomposing structures" to Dr. rer. nat. PhD. In 1988 she moved to the Technical University of Berlin . In 1992 she completed her habilitation on “Discrete Algorithms for Routing in Chip Layout”, whereupon in 1993 she was given a substitute professorship at the Chair for Theoretical Computer Science at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . In 1994 she accepted a call to a C4 professorship for computer science at the University of Konstanz . In 2003 she took over a chair for algorithms at the University of Karlsruhe, now the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology .

Wagner's main focus lies in the area of tension between theoretical principles and the application of algorithms. Current research focuses on algorithms for problems in the traffic sector, in particular for route planning, for the optimization of energy systems, as well as algorithms for the analysis and visualization of network data. She coordinated the EU Research Training Network “AMORE: Algorithmic Methods for Optimizing the Railways in Europe” and was the spokesperson for the DFG priority program SPP 1126 “Algorithms for Large and Complex Networks”.

engagement

In addition to her research work, Dorothea Wagner is involved in various scientific committees. From 2000 to 2007 she was a specialist reviewer or specialist board member for theoretical computer science and from 2004 spokesperson for the specialist board computer science of the German Research Foundation. From 2007 to 2014 she was Vice President of the German Research Foundation . Dorothea Wagner has been a member of the Science Council since 2015 and deputy chairwoman of the Scientific Committee of the Science Council since 2019. In 2020, she was unanimously elected chairman of the Science Council and successor to Martina Brockmeier .
