The Gesellschaft für Informatik e. V. (abbreviated GI ) is the largest IT specialist agency in German-speaking countries. It is a non-profit specialist society that has set itself the goal of promoting IT in Germany.

history

Since 1969, the GI has been promoting IT in research , teaching and application as well as continuing education in this area. The registered non-profit association has around 20,000 members , including over 200 corporate (company) members and 1,000 students (as of January 2018).

The GI is a member of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and the Council for European Professional Informatics Societies (CEPIS). It also has a seat and vote on the Board of Trustees of the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring Foundation . She is also a partner in the Leibniz Center for Computer Science (LZI) at Schloss Dagstuhl , the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe (FIZ), the Service Society for Computer Science (DLGI) and, together with the Fraunhofer Society and the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, sponsor the nationwide IT competitions sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research .

In over 130 professionally organized and over 30 regionally structured groups (as of January 2018), practical and research experiences are exchanged, manufacturer-neutral further training is carried out, positions in relation to politics and other social groups are developed and mutually advised.

With events, awards and competitions such as the DevCamps, the informatiCup, the Informatik-Biber or the youth competition Informatik, the company promotes understanding and interest in informatics, young talent and achievements in the field of informatics. In addition, she advises federal and state governments, ministries, authorities and parliaments on issues relating to IT and information processing.

On November 29, 2012, the GI opened an office in Berlin.

Departments

The GI is headed by a four-person board consisting of a president and three vice-presidents. Together with up to three other members, they form the extended board. This is also part of the Presidium. In addition to the extended board, the presidium includes the 13 department spokespersons, 2 representatives of the regional groups, 3 representatives of the associated companies, 14 other presidium members and the management of the GI.

The current extended board (2019) includes President Hannes Federrath , the three Vice Presidents Christine Regitz , Michael Goedicke , Alexander von Gernler as well as Michael Koch , Ulrike Lucke and Martin Wolf .

Meetings

The GI regularly organizes extensive specialist conferences. The GI annual INFORMATIK conferences take place in cooperation with universities and industrial partners in German-speaking countries at different locations. The INFORMATICS 2017 was held under the motto "Digital Cultures" in Chemnitz instead. The INFORMATICS 2018 was held under the motto - "The future of work in computer science Future" in Berlin instead. The upcoming conference will focus on the GI's 50th birthday. The venue is Kassel. The INFORMATIK conferences of the GI traditionally cover the entire spectrum of computer science.

A symposium on IT and Schools (INFOS) has been held every two years since 1984. The DBIS department has been organizing the BTW conference series (database systems for business, technology and the web) since 1985 . The human-computer interaction department has been organizing the human and computer conference series since 2001 . The departments and specialist groups of the GI hold approx. 250 events annually.

The GI awards the Konrad Zuse Medal for services to computer science every two years . In addition, the GI honors people who have made a special contribution to computer science and the GI as GI fellows. Outstanding young people can be awarded as junior fellows.
