Matthias Jarke

Matthias Jarke (born May 28, 1952 in Hamburg ) is a German computer scientist .

After studying computer science and business administration, Matthias Jarke received his doctorate in business informatics at the University of Hamburg in 1980 , and was appointed to a business informatics professorship at the Stern School of Business at New York University in 1981 , where he also received tenure. In 1986 he took over a chair at the University of Passau before joining RWTH Aachen University in 1991 as a chair for information systems . From 1992 to 2000 he was spokesman for the IT department there.

Since January 1, 2000, he has also been head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT in Sankt Augustin . Between 2010 and 2015 he was chairman of the Fraunhofer IUK Technology Group and a member of the Fraunhofer Presidium. With over 4,000 employees and a budget of around € 250 million, the Fraunhofer IUK Technology Group is one of the largest organizations for research in applied IT in Europe.

In 2002 Jarke founded the B-IT Foundation ( Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology ) with endowed professorships and international courses in Birlinghoven. In 2008, the NRW Research School was added to the structured doctoral training, of which he has been spokesperson ever since.

His research focuses on metadata management and data quality, requirements and information systems engineering, as well as mobile and cooperative information systems. Jarke was a member of the steering committee of the Aachen concept "RWTH 2020: Meeting Global Challenges", which was approved as part of the Excellence Initiative to expand top-level university research, and is deputy spokesman for the UMIC Cluster of Excellence.

The graduate in business administration was treasurer of the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI) from 2000–2003 and President of the GI from 2004–2007. During this time, he was also the overall scientific coordinator of the Federal Government's "Computer Science Year - Science Year 2006".

Jarke is the author of several books and over 300 refereed publications in magazines and conferences and is one of the most cited German computer science researchers. He worked for a long time as the main editor of the magazine "Information Systems" and is active on numerous advisory boards. He is a Fellow of the Society for Computer Science and was elected to the German Academy of Science and Engineering acatech in 2012. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) elected Jarke as a member (Fellow) in 2013 .
