Wilfried Brauer (born August 8, 1937 in Berlin ; † February 25, 2014 in Bonn ) was a German computer scientist .

Life

After studying in Bonn, Brauer worked as a research assistant at a research institute from 1961 to 1963 and completed his habilitation a few years after completing his doctorate (with Wolfgang Krull ) in Bonn. In 1971 he became the first full professor at what was then the Institute for Computer Science at the University of Hamburg . There he taught theoretical computer science to numerous major and minor students of computer science and supervised a large number of diploma and doctoral theses . His activity in Hamburg lasted until 1985 when he accepted a position at the Technical University of Munich . There he headed the chair for theoretical computer science until his retirement in 2006.

In 1996 he received an honorary doctorate from the computer science department of the University of Hamburg, which has now become a department. Another recognition of his services as a pioneer in computer science was the award of an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Berlin in 2004.

From 1977 to 1979 he was President of the Society for Computer Science .

Honors

Brauer was a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
