Stefan Jähnichen (born August 8, 1947 in Chemnitz ) is a German computer scientist.

Life

After graduating from high school on February 24, 1967 at the Sophie-Charlotte-Oberschule in Berlin, Jähnichen studied electrical engineering at the TU Berlin from October 15, 1967 to June 11, 1974 . From November 1, 1970 he worked as a tutor at the First Institute for General Electrical Engineering with Professor Manfred Michel and graduated with a diploma in electrical engineering. From July 1, 1974 to 1984, Jähnichen worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Applied Computer Science at the Technical University of Berlin in the software technology research group, which was first headed by Cornelis Koster , and from 1978 by Christiane Floyd . In 1979 he received his doctorate there as a Dr.-Ing., The topic of his doctoral thesis was exception handling in sequential programs. Between 1984 and 1986 Jähnichen was a research associate of the GMD research group at the University of Karlsruhe and from 1986 to 1991 its head. From 1988 to 1991 he was C3 professor at the University of Karlsruhe in the field of computer technology. In 1991 he returned to the Technical University of Berlin, where he has been head of the software engineering department of Faculty IV (electrical engineering and computer science) as a C4 professor.

From 2001 to 2012, in addition to his duties as a university lecturer, Jähnichen also served as director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Architecture and Software Technology (FIRST). In addition, he was President of the Society for Computer Science from 2008 to 2011 . Furthermore, from 2004 to 2011 Jähnichen was a member of the specialist committee for computer science - software technology of the German Research Foundation and from 2006 to 2012 a member of the supervisory board of the European Center for Information and Communication Technologies EICT GmbH. In 2013 Jähnichen received an honorary doctorate from the University of Potsdam .

Stefan Jähnichen is married and has two children.
