Computer scientist
Computer scientists work in the field of computer science . You research or apply computer science, especially in software development and information technology (IT).
The pioneers of computer science shaped and continue to shape computer science, which is the basis of software technology and IT. Some computer scientists only investigate problems of a theoretical nature in scientific computer science. Software developers and information technicians solve practical problems in a specific application context by creating and using software.
Germany
education
By completing a computer science course at universities, academic degrees such as diploma , bachelor or master can be acquired. The computer science course is the basis for application-oriented professions such as software developer , and a master’s or diploma degree also qualifies you for a research career in science or industry .
In information technology (IT), the degree of state-certified computer scientist can be obtained at vocational academies, vocational schools and colleges or the state qualification diploma (BA), which is not an academic degree, at some professional academies . The academic degree Bachelor of Science (short: B.Sc.) " Computer Science " is usually acquired at a university or technical college . Among the IT professions there are several recognized training professions , such as the IT specialist .
Professional associations
The Society for Computer Science, with around 20,000 members , advocates the interests of computer scientists .
The German Federal Association of Information Technology for Self-Employed (DBITS) is an association of self-employed computer scientists .
Austria
In Austria you need a degree in computer science, a degree from a technical college or an apprenticeship as an information technologist .
Apprenticeship completion
The final apprenticeship examination is carried out by the local Chamber of Commerce . The prerequisite for registration is an existing apprenticeship relationship, a certificate from the vocational school and proof of the examination fee. Extraordinary admission to the final apprenticeship examination (e.g. in the second educational path or if an apprenticeship is lost) is possible.
The final apprenticeship examination consists of a theoretical and a practical part. If the last class of the vocational school has not been successfully completed, the written part of the final apprenticeship examination must also be taken in addition to the examination.
Switzerland
vocational training
In Switzerland, the training professions known in Germany as IT specialists also carry the designation of IT, more precisely IT specialist EFZ. After completing your training in Switzerland, for example, you have the title “IT specialist EFZ specializing in systems technology” (see section Switzerland in the IT specialist article ).

Proportion of women
The professional area is now considered a classic male domain . The proportion of women in training and professional practice in the three German-speaking countries in 2010 was below 29%. The article “ Women in IT ” describes the roles women have played in the development of IT.
