BTW (conference)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BTW (Database Systems for B usiness, T echnology and W eb) is a series of conferences organized by the Society for Computer Science with a focus on databases and their applications. The conference has been held every two years since 1985 and sees itself as the most important scientific conference on databases and information systems in German-speaking countries. It is organized by the Databases and Information Systems (DBIS) department of the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI).

history

Two years before the first BTW conference, a series of conferences was discussed within the framework of the GI, which could show advances in database systems in research, development and applications. In order not to restrict the thematic range too much and to clarify the application, the term “office, technology and science” was chosen, along with the acronym “BTW”, which is still used today. The first BTW conference in Karlsruhe was a success with 320 participants, and the conferences are still very popular today.

Due to new technologies and fields of application, especially in the internet area, the main topics of the conferences changed so that the original name no longer reflected the current applications. For this reason, at the tenth BTW conference in Leipzig in 2003, the new designation "Database systems for business, technology and the web" was established while retaining the acronym "BTW". Further innovations in the course of time were the introduction of an industry program, a demo program, a tutorial and workshop program and the award of the best dissertations on databases and information systems.

The last BTW conference took place in March 2019 in Rostock. The next conference will be held in Dresden in March 2021.
