Gerhard Weikum (2018)

Gerhard Weikum (born September 28, 1957 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German computer scientist and currently one of five directors at the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science in Saarbrücken.

Life

Weikum completed his computer science studies at the TU Darmstadt in 1986 with a doctorate. In 1987 he was a university assistant or postdoc at the TU Darmstadt, from 1988 to 1989 he worked at MCC in Austin and from 1989 to 1990 at the ETH Zurich . From 1990 to 1994 he taught at the ETH in Zurich as a professor of computer science and then moved to the Saarland University in Saarbrücken, where he worked until 2003. Since 2003 he has been Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science and since 2004 Dean of the International Max Planck Research School for Computer Science .

Research priorities

  • Distributed information systems, peer-to-peer systems
  • Performance optimization (automatic tuning) and self-organization (autonomic computing) of database systems
  • Intelligent organization of and search in semi-structured information
