Carl August Zehnder (born October 5, 1937 in Baden AG ) is a Swiss computer scientist and professor emeritus at the ETH Zurich .

biography

After studying at the ETH Zurich , where he did his doctorate in 1965 on computer calculation of timetables and timetables , he worked in industrial consultancy. From 1966 to 1967 he did a research stay in the USA at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After returning to Switzerland, he worked at the ETH in the IT department. In 1970 he was appointed assistant professor and in 1979 he was appointed full professor of computer science .

Carl August Zehnder was one of the three founders of the Swiss Informatics Society in 1983 . In 1989 he organized the BTW conference with Theo Härder in Zurich . Rolf Pfeifer is one of Zehnder's prominent students and PhD students .

Carl August Zehnder was a board member of the Gebert Rüf Foundation , the largest science foundation in Switzerland , from its inception until 2011 . "In his foundation work, he was particularly responsible for the foundation's activities in technical and engineering areas as well as for projects in the technical college sector."

Awards

In 2008 Zehnder received the 200,000 Swiss franc award from the Dr. JE Brandenberger , because he "made the knowledge of computer science accessible and usable to the general public."

In 2015, Zehnder was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Université de Friborg . The reasoning states: "In the field of research, Prof. Zehnder published groundbreaking articles on databases, IT law (especially in connection with data protection issues and personal data), the development and use of large IT systems."
