Hans-Jürgen Appelrath
Hans-Jürgen Appelrath (born February 7, 1952 in Duisburg ; † August 5, 2016 in Oldenburg ) was Professor of Practical Computer Science at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg .
Life
After his Abitur in June 1970 at the Mercator-Gymnasium in Duisburg, Appelrath studied mathematics and philosophy from 1970 to 1972 for the teaching post at the University of Bonn . He then switched to the computer science diploma course with a minor in mathematics at the University of Dortmund , which he successfully completed in March 1977. From 1977 to 1979 he was a research assistant in the IT department of the University of Dortmund in various industrial cooperations. 1979–1983 he worked as a research assistant at the “Chair of Databases” there. In May 1983 Appelrath was promoted to Dr. rer. nat. PhD at the University of Dortmund .
From 1984 to 1986 he was senior assistant and research group leader at the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich , where he was appointed Assistant Professor of Computer Science in 1986. Between 1986 and 2001, calls at universities in Augsburg, Koblenz, Münster and Innsbruck were rejected.
In 1987 Appelrath was offered a professorship for practical computer science at the University of Oldenburg. He has been a board member at the OFFIS computer science institute since it was founded in July 1991 (June 1992 to June 2005 as chairman). From 2009 to 2010 he was Vice President for Research at the University of Oldenburg; Appelrath was again since June 1, 2014, then acting Vice President for Research.
Act
Hans-Jürgen Appelrath was the author and editor of textbooks and numerous other publications. For many years he has been responsible for extensive third-party funded projects at the university and its affiliated institute OFFIS, which employs around 280 scientific staff.
Appelrath was a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) and an advisory board member at the Institute for Computer Science at the University of Zurich and at the Technology Center for Computer Science (TZI) at the University of Bremen.
Appelrath was also a member of the supervisory boards of several companies and chairman of the sponsoring association of the University of Applied Sciences for IT and Business in Oldenburg .
