Hans-Jürgen Engell

Hans-Jürgen Engell (born October 15, 1925 in Bad Reinerz , Glatz district , Lower Silesia province ; † September 20, 2007 in Ratingen ) was a German chemist and materials scientist .

Life

Engell studied chemistry and in 1952 at the University of Greifswald with the work of the chemisorption of oxygen on oxides and their importance for solid state reactions to Dr. rer. nat. PhD . From 1952 to 1962 he was a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf . In 1965 he was appointed Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart . From 1971 to 1990 he was the director and general manager of the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf, which is jointly supported by the Steel Institute VDEh and the Max Planck Society.

He was honorary professor at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and the Technical University of Clausthal . Since 1971 he has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts . He was an honorary member of the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research in Dresden (IFW Dresden).

He was also a member from 1979 to 1985 and from 1982 to 1985 chairman of the Science Council , the most important scientific policy advisory body in Germany.

Act

Engell was known worldwide as a renowned scientist with a high reputation in the field of metallurgy and materials science . His main research areas were theoretical thermodynamics , the kinetics of metallurgical reactions, corrosion and material development.
