The Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden - IFW Dresden for short - is a non-university research institute in the Free State of Saxony and a member of the Leibniz Association . It conducts materials science on a scientific basis and spans a range from the progress of knowledge in the fields of physics and chemistry to the technological preparation of new materials and products.

The institute is located on the central campus of the Technical University of Dresden , on the corner of Nöthnitzer Strasse and Helmholtzstrasse in Dresden-Südvorstadt .

history

The institute was founded on January 1, 1992 from the former Central Institute for Solid State Physics and Materials Research [sic!] Of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR as a Blue List facility .

It emerged from the largest material research center in the GDR, which at that time already enjoyed international renown. In the meantime, the IFW Dresden has developed into an internationally leading institute in selected areas of scientifically based materials research.

IFW Dresden is a founding member of the DRESDEN-concept science association, which was founded in 2010 and consists of research institutes from various disciplines, with the aim of better networking science in Dresden and making it more visible.

Personnel and Financing

IFW Dresden employs around 500 people with an employment contract. 250 of them are scientists, mostly physicists, chemists and engineers. There are also around 80 scientists who contribute to the scientific output of the IFW as scholarship holders and guests. Of the total of 330 scientists, 130 are junior staff who are doing their doctoral thesis at the IFW and are therefore involved in the research projects of the IFW.

The basic funding of around 33 million euros (2016) is provided half by the federal government and half by the federal states. Most of the state funds are borne by the Free State of Saxony. In addition to the basic funding, the IFW also raised around 10 million euros in project funding in 2016.

Organization / institutes

Institute building of the IFW Dresden

The institute is headed by the Scientific Director, Bernd Büchner, and the Commercial Director, Doreen Kirmse, who together make up the Executive Board.

The scientific area of the IFW Dresden is divided into five IFW institutes, whose directors are also professors at the TU Dresden and the TU Chemnitz :

There are also the areas of research technology and administration.

Research program

The focus of the research program is on physical and chemical phenomena in solids that are interesting and useful for new functional materials. It includes materials that have special physical effects of quantum mechanics, such as magnetism and superconductivity, or that promise special properties due to their nano-scale, such as metallic glasses, nanoparticles or rolled up structures and nanotubes.

In all of these research areas, the entire spectrum is covered, from the physical and chemical principles to the technical process and the product.
