International Society of Electrochemistry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Society of Electrochemistry ISE ( International Society for Electrochemistry ) is a scientific society based in Lausanne , Switzerland . It has approximately 3000 members from over 70 countries and is one of the 31 organizations associated with the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry IUPAC ( Associated Organizations ). The ISE - together with Elsevier - publishes the scientific journal Electrochimica Acta , which has been published since April 1959 , and organizes a conference at least once a year.

Historical

On March 28, 1949, electrochemists founded the “ C omité I nternational de T hermodynamique et de C inétique E lectrochimiques” CITCE, ( International Committee for Thermodynamics and Electrochemical Kinetics ) in Brussels . The founders included John Bockris (1923–2013), who was then working at Imperial College in London , as well as the Belgian scientists Pierre Van Rysselberghe (1905–1955, since 1941 at the University of Oregon ) and Marcel Pourbaix (1904–1998). Pourbaix, known for his Pourbaix diagrams , was ISE General Secretary from 1949 to 1957 and Van Rysselberghe was President of ISE until 1953. Annual conferences were held from the beginning. The topics of the first conferences also included the electrochemical nomenclature, which resulted in the collaboration with IUPAC. In 1971, when the CITCE had over 400 individual and 54 corporate members from 36 countries, the current name International Society of Electrochemistry was adopted. Heinz Gerischer was ISE President from 1971 to 1972. By 1998 the number of members rose to 1,100.

aims

One of the goals of ISE is to advance electrochemical science and technology and to disseminate scientific and technical knowledge.
