Heinz Gerischer

Heinz Gerischer (born March 31, 1919 in Wittenberg , † September 14, 1994 in Berlin ) was a German chemist.

Gerischer studied in Leipzig chemistry and in 1946 with a thesis on the periodic operations in the electrolytic dissolution of copper in hydrochloric acid at Karl Friedrich Bonhoeffer doctorate . He switched to the Humboldt University in Berlin and then to the Max Planck Institute for Physical Chemistry in Göttingen . He later went to the Max Planck Institute for Metal Research and in 1956 as a lecturer at the University of Stuttgart. Then in 1962 he accepted an appointment at the Technical University of Munich as Professor of Electrochemistry, and in 1964 he took over the management of the Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry there.

In November 1969, Heinz Gerischer was appointed director of the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society . He took over the physical chemistry department and developed a new research focus in the field of electrochemistry of metals and semiconductors , including photochemical effects. Research on solid surfaces in ultra-high vacuum and in contact with gases was intensified.

Based on the low-temperature technology introduced by Max von Laue in the institute, matrix isolation spectroscopy was included as a research area in order to study the transition between atomic and solid-state properties on atom clusters.

In 1973 Gerischer was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Heinz Gerischer was the doctoral supervisor of the Nobel Prize winner Gerhard Ertl , who succeeded him in 1986 at the Fritz Haber Institute, and the doctoral supervisor of Dieter M. Kolb , who founded the Gerischer Symposium in Gerischer's honor .

The Heinz Gerischer Award of the European Section of the Electrochemical Society is named after Heinz Gerischer and was first presented in 2003.
