Dieter M. Kolb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dieter Michael Kolb (born October 11, 1942 in Amberg in the Upper Palatinate ; † October 4, 2011 in Ulm ) was a German electrochemist who taught and researched as a professor at Ulm University from September 1990 to September 2010 and was director of the Institute for Electrochemistry there. One of the aims of his research was to understand the processes at electrodes on the atomic level, to which he made many contributions. The branch of research co-founded by Kolb is also called "electrochemical surface science ". In order to study the arrangement of atoms on the surface of electrodes, in his group z. B. used scanning tunneling microscopy .

Life

Dieter Kolb studied physics at the Technical University of Munich from 1961 to 1966 . He wrote his doctoral thesis from 1966 to April 1969 at the Institute for Physical Chemistry at the Technical University of Munich in the group of Heinz Gerischer . From 1969 to 1971 he worked in the Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill , 1971-1990 again as an employee of Gerischer, now at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin. In November 1976 Kolb completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin. There he was appointed professor of chemistry in 1984.

In 1990 Kolb was appointed to the University of Ulm, where he started teaching as a professor for physical chemistry in September 1990. In 1992 Kolb's wife Franziska, whom he married in 1969, died of blood cancer. The Franziska Kolb Foundation, established by Kolb in 1994, promotes leukemia research with an annual research award.

From 2003 to 2004 Kolb was President of the International Society of Electrochemistry . In 2011 Kolb became one of the directors of the then newly founded Helmholtz Institute Ulm .
