Olin Palladium Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Olin-Palladium Price ( english Olin Palladium Award ) is one of the Electrochemical Society founded in 1951 and 1950 for the first time conferred price . It recognizes outstanding contributions to the fundamental understanding of electrochemical processes , especially corrosion . It originally consisted of a palladium medal and was therefore also called that ( English Palladium Medal ). Later the price was for a donation of Olin Corporation in Olin Palladium Award renamed. The Olin Palladium Award is presented every two years by the Electrochemical Society during its fall meeting.

Components of the price

The honoree will receive a palladium medal and a plaque containing a bronze copy of the medal, both with the recipient's name. The medal shows Pallas Athene , holding a spear in his right hand and a shield in his left that bears the coat of arms of the Electrochemical Society (outside with the writing "The Electrochemical Society", inside "Founded in Philadelphia 1902, Incorporated 1930"). Behind and next to Athena are symbols of the four elements earth, fire, air and water; therefore the symbols for Venus / copper ♀, Mercury / mercury ☿, Mars / iron ♂, moon / silver ☾, sun / gold ☉ and Ceres ⚳ are arranged. The recipient is allowed to give a lecture and also receives a lifetime membership in the Electrochemical Society and currently $ 7,500, and a banquet is held in his honor.

Historical

The award, introduced in 1950, was originally funded from revenue generated by the ECS Corrosion Handbook . The award consisted of a palladium medal. The palladium for this was donated by the International Nickel Company , which has now been merged into the Canadian mining company Vale Inco . The medal was first awarded in 1951. In 1971, the prize pool was set at $ 1,500. After a donation from the Olin Corporation , the name of the award was changed in 1977, initially to the Olin Palladium Medal and Prize . Today the award is known as the Olin Palladium Award .
