Ulick Richardson Evans

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulick Richardson Evans (born March 31, 1889 , † April 3, 1980 ) was an English chemist who mainly dealt with the corrosion of metals . He worked at Cambridge University and is considered the "father of the modern science of corrosion and corrosion protection of metals" or, for short, the "father of corrosion research".

Life

Evans was born in Wimbledon , which is now part of London . He was educated from 1902 to 1907 at Marlborough College in Marlborough and 1907 to 1911 at King's College in Cambridge , where he was also supervised by the metallurgist Charles Heycock . He then did research on electrochemistry, one year in Wiesbaden in Heinrich Fresenius' group and then in London with Samuel and Eric Rideal . His studies were interrupted by the First World War: from 1914 to 1919 he served in the army, mostly in the Middle East. After the war he returned to Cambridge. There he began his research on corrosion and oxidation of metals, which occupied him throughout his working life. On the occasion of his admission to the Royal Society in 1949, he was named "one of the leading authorities on metal corrosion" and was referred to his experiments with varying air flows.

Evans was a very active athlete, especially outdoors and especially cross-country running , but also swimming and mountaineering. He was the vice president of his university's cyclo-cross club for 40 years and took part in several races with his colleagues. He mainly practiced mountaineering in the Lake District , but also in the Dolomites and the Austrian Alps. Evans retired in 1954, but continued to work and published other publications on corrosion well into old age. He died in Cambridge in 1980.

Evans has authored over 200 scientific publications on corrosion, plus several extensive books.

Evans diagram

An Evans diagram is a plot of the potentials of anode and cathode processes against the current density or against the logarithm of the current density - in the latter case the plot can result in straight lines. It is used to determine the corrosion potential and the corrosion current density, from which z. B. Estimate removal rates.
