Life
Charlotte Dorothée Freiin van Pallandt was born as the daughter of Jan Anne Baron van Pallandt, Lord von Walfort (1866–1936) and Sarah Agnes Sophie Baroness van Pallandt (1868–1955) and belonged to the Dutch branch of the von Pallandt family . She grew up in Schaarsbergen Province of Gelderland and initially received home schooling. When her family moved to The Hague in 1913 , she was sent to an English boarding school. From 1918 she received her first drawing lessons from the Hague painter Albert Roelofs . She married in 1919 and lived with her husband in Bern until 1923 . After the divorce in 1924, she took lessons in Lausanne for some time and traveled to Paris in 1926 . There she took lessons from the painter André Lhote, who was of crucial importance for her further development. Although she quit class after a year for fear of being too influenced by Lhote, the two remained connected. Van Pallandt went to The Hague and worked for a time in the studio of the sculptor Toon Dupuis . In 1928 she went on a trip through central Italy and met the sculptors Albert Termote , Charles Despiau and Charles Malfray . Under the guidance of Malfrey, she attended the sculpture course at the Académie Ranson in Paris. After the outbreak of World War II, Charlotte van Pallandt had to return to the Netherlands in 1941.
