Otto Willem Albertus Roelofs (born September 5, 1877 in Brussels , † December 31, 1920 in The Hague ) was a Dutch genre painter , watercolorist , draftsman and lithographer of Impressionism . His father was the famous landscape painter Willem Roelofs .

life and work

Albert Roelofs was born in Brussels on September 5, 1877. His father, Willem Roelofs (1822–1897) was an important painter at the time and had a major influence on impressionist painting in the Netherlands. Albert Roelofs lived and worked in Brussels, Paris and The Hague from 1893 to 1920 .

Roelofs studied at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (The Hague) and with Victor Olivier Gilsoul (1867–1939) at the Académie Julian (Paris).

Queen Wilhelmina and Princess Juliana took painting lessons with Albert Roelofs. His motifs were mostly genre scenes, landscapes, still lifes , animals and portraits .

He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae , Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij and Pulchri Studio .

Although Albert Roelofs is not very well known, six-figure sums are often paid for his works. This is almost certainly due to his pleasing motives.
