The University of Oregon ( UO ) is a comprehensive university of the Oregon University System and is based in Eugene , Oregon . It was founded in 1876. Around 23,000 students are enrolled at the university. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities , an association of leading research-intensive North American universities that has existed since 1900.

The current president is Richard W. Lariviere. The school colors are green and yellow.

history

Deady Hall

The university was founded in 1872 following a resolution by the Oregon Parliament. Teaching began in 1876 with five lecturers and 155 students. The university's first building, the historic Deady Hall , built in 1876 , was listed on April 11, 1972 by the National Register of Historic Places under number 72001082. In 1881 the university was so indebted that it should be closed. Twice, in 1913 and 1932, plans were made to merge the university with Oregon State University . Both times, however, unsuccessful. In 1969 she was accepted into the Association of American Universities , an association of leading research-intensive North American universities that had existed since 1900.

The UO campus has 80 buildings and several sports facilities.

The area is 1.1 km². There are over 500 different tree species in the park. Numerous protests took place here during the Vietnam War .

At the end of the 1960s, the campus was redesigned. Students fought for participation in the redesign of the university. For example, trails were deliberately used as a design tool. The university management hired the Viennese architect Christopher Alexander at the time . According to his plan, the area between the university buildings was leveled and sown with lawn. The trails that arose after months were converted into paved paths ("Desire Lines").

Of the 23,389 students enrolled in 2010, 53% were women and 47% were men. In 2010 there were 1,750 international students from a total of 86 countries (7% of the student body).

Mascot Oregon Duck

The University of Oregon sports team is the Oregon Ducks ; her mascot is the Oregon Duck, which is based on Donald Duck . The university is part of the Pacific-12 Conference . In addition to the popular football program, the University of Oregon is a renowned address for Track & Field. The track and field stadium of the University of Oregon is Hayward Field, where, in addition to college championships, the Diamond League Meeting Prefontaine Classics, named after Steve Préfontaine, takes place every year. In addition, the United States Olympic Track and Field Trials are often held on Hayward, most recently in 2016. The World Athletics Championships will also take place there in 2021. Because of its renowned track and field history, Eugene is also nicknamed Track-Town USA.
