history
Like many other educational institutions today, the college grew out of the educational institution of a particular religious group, in this case the College of Presbyterian Pioneers in Oregon's Willamette Valley . To this end, the Presbyterian Church founded the Albany Academy in 1858 . The Lewis & Clark is one of four colleges in Oregon whose founding dates before the state of Oregon was founded (together with Willamette University , Pacific University and Linfield College ). Already in the first decade after its inception, the Albany Academy focused on further studies and in 1866 took the name Albany Collegiate Institution . The Official Establishment Date of Lewis & Clark's College refers to the charter that has been in place since the Presbyterian Church's establishment as Albany College in 1867. Unlike most other pioneering colleges in the region, the college was co- educational from the start . The first year doctorate graduated in 1873. The first 7 acre campus in Albany was on property donated by the Monteith family. In 1892 the school building was enlarged and in 1925 the school moved to the south of Albany, where it existed until 1937.
The Albany College taught in 1934 in the north of Portland, a junior college , and in 1939 the school moved to a total to Portland. The Federal Government's Albany Research Center later moved to the former campus . In 1942, the acquired College Trustees , the property Lloyd Frank Fir Acres Estate in Southwest Portland. The property had belonged to the owners of the Meier & Frank department store in Portland. The school adopted the name Lewis & Clark College . The school mascot Pirates became Pioneers in 1946 .
