Big Love is an American television series about the life of a polygamist family who see their ideological roots in Mormonism . A total of five seasons were produced between 2006 and 2011. The final season aired in the United States from January 16 through March 20, 2011 on HBO . In German-speaking countries, it was first broadcast on the TNT series , where the last season was shown from January 3, 2012. The series was produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman's company Playtone .

action

Bill Henrickson runs a thriving home improvement store in Salt Lake City . Since polygamy is both illegal in present-day Utah and officially rejected according to the teaching of the dominant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , he has to go to great lengths to keep this aspect of his private belief a secret. Bill is married to three women: the well-organized "main wife" Barbara ( Jeanne Tripplehorn ), the insincere and shopaholic Nicki ( Chloë Sevigny ) and the cheerful and somewhat naive Margene ( Ginnifer Goodwin ). The women live in three neighboring houses, the properties of which are connected at the rear. There are seven children in the family.

Bill's second wife Nicki is the daughter of the self-proclaimed prophet Roman Grant ( Harry Dean Stanton ), who heads a sect-like Mormon splinter church and is involved in various dubious machinations. Bill grew up in a gated area called Juniper Creek but was chased away by Grant when he was 14. His younger brother and parents (played by Grace Zabriskie and Bruce Dern ) still live there. Time and again there are conflicts between the “modern” polygamist Bill, who lives successfully in the outside world, and his fundamentalist community of origin.

Season 3 is about the death of Roman Grant and the fact that his son and Nicki's brother Albert Grant will succeed him as prophet, as well as the planning and opening of a joint Native American casino. This casino is designed to provide the Henrickson family with a livelihood in the event the home improvement stores fail. You will lose it later, however.

In season 4, after receiving testimony, Bill is running for a senatorial seat. He wins this by keeping his lifestyle secret. After becoming a Senator, he tries to use his position to legalize polygamy and to break up Juniper Creeks.

In the 5th and final season, Margene confesses to the rest of the family that she was only 16 when she married Bill and therefore not yet of legal age. Since she became the 3rd wife, her marriage to Bill is not legally legitimized, but only ecclesiastical, which means that they were only sealed. The family plans to keep this a secret. However, this does not succeed. Police investigations then begin, with Bill being accused of rape and his 1st wife, Barbara, pomposity. At the same time, Bill and Barbara get divorced so that Bill can officially marry his 2nd wife Nicki so that the family can adopt their daughter from their 1st marriage. In the series finale, Bill shoots Albert Grant, who survives and is then arrested. The family bridges their differences and Bill learns that he has lost the home improvement store because the banks deny him further credit. In the newly built church, the former members of Juniper Creek gather on Easter Sunday and Bill takes the role of the new prophet. During his sermon he has a vision and seems to have reached his goal. At the end of the episode, he meets his neighbor, whose life has slipped away. In a seemingly psychotic madness, the neighbor shoots Bill. His three wives run out of the house and Bill asks Barbara to give him a blessing. He is conferring priesthood on her in his last hour. The last sequences show the family 11 months later. Barbara's and Bill's daughter had a child with her husband. Nicki is still very sad about Bill's death and Margene is going abroad for 3 months to do charitable work.
