Earl Blumenauer

Earl Blumenauer (born August 16, 1948 in Portland , Oregon ) is an American politician . Since 1996 he has represented the third constituency of the state of Oregon in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

Earl Blumenauer attended Centennial High School until 1966 and then Lewis & Clark College in Portland until 1970 . He graduated from Lewis & Clark Law School in 1976 with a law degree . Between 1970 and 1977 he was an assistant to the director of Portland State University in addition to his student days .

Blumenauer became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1973 and 1978 he was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives ; from 1975 to 1981 he served on the board of directors of Portland Community College . He was then from 1978 to 1985 District Administrator ( Commissioner ) in Multnomah County . He was also a member of the Portland City Council from 1986 to 1996. In 1990 and 1991 he served on the Governor of Oregon Education Committee .

Congressman

After Congressman Ron Wyden was elected to the US Senate , by - elections were held in early 1996 in the third constituency of Oregon for the position that had become vacant in the US House of Representatives. Earl Blumenauer won these elections as his party's candidate with 69% of the vote. He was able to take up his new mandate in Congress on May 21, 1996 . As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative period runs until January 3, 2019. His election results were at times between 67% and 84%. In Congress he is or was a member of the Budget Committee , the Committee on Ways and Means and one of its sub-committees. In 2004 and 2008 he chaired the campaign teams for John Kerry and Barack Obama in Oregon. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell .

In view of the involvement of his compatriot Gordon Sondland in the Ukraine affair , Blumenau called for a boycott of his hotels.

Earl Blumenauer is married to Margaret Kirkpatrick Blumenauer. He lives in Portland privately.
