John N. Williamson
John Newton Williamson (born November 8, 1855 in Junction City , Lane County , Oregon , † August 29, 1943 in Prineville , Oregon) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). Between 1903 and 1907 he represented the second constituency of the state of Oregon in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Williamson attended public schools in his home country and then Willamette University in Salem . After moving to Prineville, he became involved in raising livestock. Between 1886 and 1888, Williamson was also a sheriff in Crook County .
Between 1888 and 1898 Williamson was a member of the House of Representatives from Oregon ; from 1900 to 1902 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1902 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he succeeded Malcolm A. Moody on March 4, 1903 . After a re-election in 1904, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1907 . In 1906 he refused to run again. This was related to his 1905 conviction for involvement in the Oregon Land Fraud Scandal . In 1908 this judgment was overturned by the United States Supreme Court .
After his tenure in Congress was over, Williamson returned to farming, and especially livestock. Between 1922 and 1934 he was a postman in Prineville. Then he finally retired from the public service. He died in August 1943. He was married to Sarah Forrest, with whom he had three children.
