John R. Dellenback

John Richard Dellenback (born November 6, 1918 in Chicago , Illinois , †  December 7, 2002 in Medford , Oregon ) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1975 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Oregon in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Dellenback attended Yale University until 1940 and served in the US Navy during World War II . Later he belonged to the reserve of this branch of service. After the war, he continued his education with a law degree at the University of Michigan . After his admission to the bar in 1949, he began to work in his new profession. At the same time, he himself held law lectures at Oregon State College , now Oregon State University .

Politically, Dellenback became a member of the Republican Party , whose Republican National Conventions he attended as a delegate in 1964, 1968 and 1972. He was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives between 1960 and 1966 and was vice chairman of the Judicial Council of that state.

In 1966 Dellenback was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he succeeded Robert B. Duncan on January 3, 1967 . Since he was confirmed in his office in the following years, he was able to complete a total of four legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1975 . There he campaigned, among other things, for a law that would make pipeline and oil tanker operators liable for environmental damage caused by accidents. In the 1974 elections he was defeated by the Democrat James H. Weaver . This election defeat was mainly due to the Watergate affair .

After his time in Congress ended, Dellenback was appointed director of the Peace Corps by new President Gerald Ford . He held this office between 1975 and 1977. From 1977 to 1988 he was President of the Coalition of Christian Colleges & Universities . John Dellenback was married to Mary Jane Dellenback. He died in Medford in December 2002.
