Medford is a city in Jackson County in the US state of Oregon . It covers 56.2 km² (21.7 mi²) of the Bear Creek Valley in southern Oregon. Medford was formed in the early 1880s as the Middle Ford for a new Oregon to California railroad that ran through the center of Bear Creek Valley. Railroad engineer David Loring from Medford, Massachusetts shortened the name "Middel Ford" to that of his hometown: Medford.

On February 24, 1885, the city of Medford was formally incorporated. Medford grew from a small parish to the largest city in southern Oregon and was designated the county seat of Jackson County. Medford's population is growing steadily. In 2000 it was 63,154 inhabitants, and in 2016 it was 81,636 inhabitants.

The National Park Service lists 43 structures and sites on the National Register of Historic Places for Medford as of January 16, 2019, including the Jackson County Courthouse .

economy

Bear Creek, the largest direct marketing company for fruit and food in the United States, is based in Medford. The company is the second largest employer in Oregon, with 3,500 permanent employees and approximately 10,000 seasonal workers. Bear Creek was founded in 1886 to market and sell the harvest from the Rogue Valley orchards .

tourism

In the Siskiyou Mountains , southeast of Medford, are the Oregon Caves National Monument , a stalactite cave in marble, and south of the city, the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument , a protected area with outstanding biodiversity .

Town twinning

The Italian city of Alba (Piedmont) has been a twin town of Medford since 1960 .
