When his parents moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s, Richter applied for a variety of roles and eventually got the lead role in Free Willy in 1993 . After the success of the film, two more parts followed. In the meantime Richter was active together with a few other artists in the band Blue Root , where he played electric guitar . As a guitarist he is just part of the band. He left the band in late 2004, according to official sources due to creative differences. From 2005 he played electric bass in the band Fermata , which broke up in January 2011.

Since then he has also taken acting engagements again and starred in various movies.
