Free Willy is a animal feature film directed by Simon Wincer and shot in the United States in 1993 .

action

The film is about the friendship of the boy Jesse with the orca (killer whale) Willy. The orca was captured as a cub. After Jesse leaves smears in an amusement park, he has to clean them up and becomes friends with Willy and the park staff. The boy teaches the orca, which is considered difficult, tricks and is allowed to perform with him. But the performance fails and Jesse decides to run away from his foster parents to look for his mother.

When Jesse says goodbye to Willy, he discovers that the park owner wants to kill Willy in order to get insurance money. Together with Rae and Randolph, who are friends of the park, he saves the orca in a dramatic action and releases it in the sea. When the pursuers block his way into the open sea, Willy manages to escape to freedom with a giant leap.

background

The real name of the Orca Willy was Keiko and was discovered by the producers of the film at the Reino Aventura amusement park in Mexico City . The great success of the film led to the formation of the Free Willy Keiko Foundation , which fought for the release of the orca. Although the group succeeded in buying Keiko with donations after the third film and abandoning it in the Atlantic , the orca was not used to life in freedom and died a year and a half later of pneumonia off the coast of Norway .

criticism

Elaborately staged family film that takes time for its story and its people. Due to the convincing performance of the acting, the sentimentality emerging towards the end is absorbed. "
