Lightning Jack is an American - Australian western comedy released in 1994 . Directed by Simon Wincer ; the screenplay was written by Paul Hogan , who also produced the film and took on the title role.

action

The action takes place in the Wild West around the year 1875. The Australian-born Lightning Jack Kane admires Jesse James and commits raids, which are mostly unsuccessful. In one of them he takes the silent Ben Doyle hostage. It turns out that Doyle wants to become a robber himself. He and Lightning Jack become friends and henceforth act together.

Lightning Jack gets to know Lana Castel and woos her. Castel falls in love with him and warns him that bounty hunters are coming to town. However, Lightning Jack feels offended when he hears from her that a relatively low price has been placed on his head.

The two robbers are planning a robbery on a bank in another city that is considered to be particularly heavily guarded. Many city dwellers belong to a vigilante group. Jack learns that another gang is about to rob the same bank and wants to give up. However, Doyle devises a plan after which the competing gang is betrayed by him and arrested by the vigilante group. While the city celebrates the arrest, Kane and Doyle steal from the bank. Kane can be photographed with the partying townspeople; this photo appears in a newspaper declaring Kane a particularly dangerous and wanted criminal.

Jack and Doyle pick up Lana Castel, using the disguise to outwit the waiting bounty hunters. They move away together.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of March 11, 1994 that it was impossible to be averse to Paul Hogan as it was impossible to like his warm-hearted but "stupid" films. Lightning Jack is an example of this.

Cinema magazine wrote that the film was a "mild western for fans of light enjoyment". The acting possibilities of the main actor are "more than limited". Either you like your “brute, stupid humor” or “it is best to keep your hands off this not very witty western parody”.

The lexicon of international films wrote that Lightning Jack was “a deliberately old-fashioned western with a comedic touch”. The “word-heavy” film offers “appealing entertainment for friends of the genre” thanks to the good play of the actors, ironic breaks and many genre quotes.

backgrounds

The film was shot in Arizona , Colorado , New Mexico , Utah and Australia . It grossed approximately $ 16.8 million in US cinemas . In Germany there were around 456 thousand cinema viewers.
