Martin Patterson Hingle (born July 19, 1924 in Denver , Colorado , † January 3, 2009 in Carolina Beach , North Carolina ) was an American actor . He achieved particular fame on the side of Clint Eastwood , with whom he made three films together, and with the role of Commissioner James Gordon in the four films of the first Batman series.

Life

Pat Hingle was born on July 19, 1924, the son of a building contractor and a school teacher. Since his parents divorced when he was a toddler, he had practically never met his father and lived with his mother, who worked as a teacher in Denver. She later moved frequently in search of more lucrative work, and by the time he was 13, Hingle had lived in more than a dozen cities. His first contact with acting was in the third grade, when he played a carrot in a school play.

Hingle graduated from high school and attended the University of Texas from 1941 . During World War II he served in the US Navy on the destroyer USS Marshall . After his military service he returned to the university and became a member of the drama group with the intention of getting to know girls. He was drafted as a reservist in the Navy during the Korean War and served on the escort ship USS Damato (DD-871) .

Together with his first wife, Alyce, whom he met at university, he moved to New York , where he got his first engagements on stage and television from 1948. The high point of his career at that time was his participation in the play JB by Archibald MacLeish . In 1959, Hingle had a serious accident: he fell into the elevator shaft of his New York apartment building and suffered life-threatening injuries. His life was in acute danger for two weeks and he lost the little finger of his left hand; his full recovery took about a year.

Throughout his long career, Hingle has often played judges, police officers, and other figures of authority. He was cast early on in roles that were significantly older than himself, for example as the father of Warren Beatty, who was only 13 years his junior, in Elia Kazan's Fever in the Blood . In 1968 he shot for the first time with Clint Eastwood. The two starred in the movies Hang Him Up , The Man Who Never Gives Up and Dirty Harry Comes Back Together.

Probably his most popular role is that of Police Commissioner James W. Gordon from the Batman films by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher . Aside from his fellow actor Michael Gough , who played the butler Alfred, he is the only actor to appear in all four films.

Most recently, Pat Hingle lived with his second wife Julia in Kure Beach, North Carolina . He died in Carolina Beach in January 2009 at the age of 84.
