Jonathan Stark (born April 3, 1971 in Medford , Oregon ) is a retired American tennis player .

Life

Stark won several Grand Slam titles in the junior competition . In 1987 he won the French Open alongside Jim Courier , the US Open in 1988 with Jonathan Yancey and Wimbledon in 1989 with Jared Palmer . In the same year he won the individual junior title of the US Open. He studied at Stanford University and was voted two times in the best selection All-American in both doubles and singles . In 1991 he reached the final of the doubles competition of the NCAA championships together with Jared Palmer . In the same year he became a tennis professional and was able to win the individual title of the Challenger tournament in Ponte Vedra as a qualifier .

In 1992 he won his first double title on the ATP World Tour at the side of Jared Palmer in Wellington . In the same year he won the double title of Sydney with Patrick McEnroe , both were also in the final of the Masters tournament in Cincinnati . Stark also reached his first individual final on the ATP World Tour that year; at the lawn tournament of Rosmalen he lost in the final against Michael Stich . He won his first individual title the following year in Bolzano by beating Cédric Pioline in the final . In 1994, after a highly successful year, he took part in the ATP World Tour Finals for the first time with his doubles partner Byron Black . In his second participation with Rick Leach in 1997, he was able to win the double title at the Tour Finals. In total, he won 19 ATP double titles in the course of his career. Another 21 times he was in a double-final. He won his second and last individual title in 1996 when he won the final over Michael Chang in Singapore . He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1994 with position 36 in singles and position one in doubles.

His best individual results in Grand Slam tournaments were third round participation at the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. In the doubles competition he won the 1994 French Open alongside Byron Black by winning the final over Jan Apell and Jonas Björkman . In the same year both were in the final of the Australian Open, where they were defeated by Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis . In 1995, Stark won the mixed competition at Wimbledon on the side of Martina Navrátilová .

Stark played two singles and four doubles games for the US Davis Cup team between 1994 and 1997 . His individual balance was even with one win and one loss. In his favorite discipline, doubles, of all things, he didn't manage to win a single victory. He was defeated three times against various Swedish pairings, including in 1997 in the 0-5 defeat in the Davis Cup final, when he was clearly defeated in three sets at Todd Martin's side against Jonas Björkmann and Nicklas Kulti .
