Tom Okker (1964)

Tom Okker (born February 22, 1944 in Amsterdam ; nickname The Flying Dutchman ) is a former Dutch tennis player . From 1964 to 1968 he was Dutch champion five times in a row. Following his success as an amateur, Okker joined professional tennis in 1968.

In 1968 he reached the quarter-finals at the Wimbledon tennis tournament . In the same year he was in the final of the US Open , but was defeated there by the American Arthur Ashe .

Okker reached his highest position in the tennis world rankings in 1969 when he finished third behind the Australian Rod Laver and the American Arthur Ashe . Overall, he stayed in the top ten for seven years.

In 1978 he reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon again.

In his career, Okker won a total of 26 tournaments in singles and 67 in doubles. In 2003 Tom Okker was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame . He is a grandson of the Olympic fencer Simon Okker , who was murdered in Auschwitz in 1944 .

After the end of his career as a tennis player, Tom Okker opened an art gallery , first in Amsterdam and later in Hazerswoude-Dorp .
