Donald James Johnson (born September 9, 1968 in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American tennis player .
Career
Johnson began his professional career in 1992 and played mostly doubles. In singles, he appeared in 23 matches, but won no title. In doubles, he first played alongside Patrick Rafter , Tom Mercer and others before forming a duo with Leander Paes . Together they won three Challenger tournaments. In 1993 he and Jonas Björkman won another tournament on the Challenger Tour in Nagoya, Japan . With Kent Kinnear he played a final in Cherbourg after a year , which was lost to Neil Broad and Johan De Beer . Several early defeats followed until July 1994 when he won the tournament in Neu-Ulm with Jack Waite . With Waite, Johnson was able to post another success in Mendoza in February 1995.
From 1996 he played with Francisco Montana , with whom he reached the quarter-finals of the French Open in 1996 and won two titles on the ATP Tour. In total, they played ten finals by the end of 1998, of which they were able to win seven. With Piet Norval , Johnson won four titles in 2000, including the Tennis Masters Cup in Bangalore . At the Wimbledon Championships in 2000 he secured the mixed title with Kimberly Po . With his next partner, Jared Palmer , he won Wimbledon in 2001 and reached the final of the US Open . In the final of Wimbledon they beat Jiří Novák and David Rikl 4: 6, 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 7. In the same year Johnson played his only match for the US Davis Cup team . With Palmer he lost against the Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes in four sets.
In 2002 he finally reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and became world number one in doubles.
