Pereira won the youth tournaments of the French Open , Wimbledon and the US Open in 1988 and then became a professional tennis player. He made a name for himself in the following year with victories over top players such as Brad Gilbert , Tim Mayotte and Stefan Edberg . However, he did not succeed in winning a title at first. He was more successful in the doubles competition, in 1990 he won the tournament in Wellington with Kelly Evernden and was in the final of Rotterdam with Diego Nargiso . The following year he defended his title in Wellington with Luiz Mattar and reached the Orlando final at the side of Pete Sampras . During this time he played in singles mainly on the ATP Challenger Tour , where he won the tournaments in Lins , São Paulo and Guarujá . In 1994 Pereira won his first individual title on the ATP World Tour in Bogotá , his second and last title followed in 1996 in Newport , in the same year he also celebrated his third and final double title alongside David Rikl . He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1996 with position 74 in singles and in 1990 with position 44 in doubles.
His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third round of the US Open in 1995. In the doubles competition, he advanced to the round of 16 at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
Pereira played 35 singles and 17 doubles games for the Venezuelan Davis Cup team between 1987 and 1997 . His greatest success with the team was participation in the 1995 world group relegation against Denmark . In the close 2-3 defeat he was able to win the doubles and the singles against Frederik Fetterlein on the side of Maurice Ruah , but lost to Kenneth Carlsen . At the 1996 Summer Olympics , he competed for Venezuela in singles and doubles. With Juan Carlos Bianchi he lost to the Japanese doubles in the first round . He was able to win his first round encounter against Hernán Gumy and was eliminated in the second round against the later bronze medalist Leander Paes .
