Sergio Casal Martínez (born September 8, 1962 in Barcelona ) is a former Spanish tennis player . He was mainly successful in doubles .

Career

Casal became a professional tennis player in 1981 and won his first ATP double title in 1983. In total he won 47 double tournaments, mostly with his compatriot Emilio Sánchez . In the individual, however, he could only win one tournament.

In his career he won three Grand Slam tournaments , the US Open in 1988 and the French Open in doubles in 1990 and the US Open in mixed with Raffaella Reggi in 1986 . He reached his highest positions in the ATP world rankings in 1985 with 31st in singles and in 1991 with 3rd in doubles.

Between 1985 and 1987 he was in the Davis Cup against Killy Sánchez Germany each Boris Becker defeat in singles. So he only beat Boris Becker, who was still almost unknown in March 1985, and the reigning (and already two-time) Wimbledon winner in March 1987. From 1981 to 1995 Casal played 48 games for the Spanish Davis Cup team with a record of 31:17 wins (doubles 19: 9).

Together with Emilio Sánchez, he won the silver medal in doubles at the 1988 Olympic Games . In 1992 he won the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf with the Spanish team .

In 1995 Sergio Casal ended his tennis career.
