Mattar became a professional tennis player in 1985 and was able to win his first individual title on the ATP Challenger Tour in Rio de Janeiro the following year . He also won his first double title at the Challenger tournament in his hometown alongside his compatriot Carlos Kirmayr . In 1987 he won his first ATP tournament in Guarujá and was able to defend the title in the following two years. Also in 1987, together with Cássio Motta, he won his first double tournament on the ATP World Tour by beating the German doubles from Tore Meinecke and Martin Hipp . In total, he was able to win seven single and five double titles in the course of his career. He won six of his seven individual titles in his home country, only celebrating his last tournament victory abroad. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1989 with position 29 in singles and in 1991 with position 55 in doubles.
His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third round at the French Open and the US Open . In the doubles competition, he made it to the round of 16 of the French Open three times.
Mattar played 31 singles and seven doubles games for the Brazilian Davis Cup team between 1986 and 1995 . His greatest success with the team was reaching the semi-finals of the world group in 1992, where he played only four of his six games. Since he played the first and the last individual and Brazil was in the lead with 3-1 in both the first round against Germany and in the quarter-finals against Italy , the games were not played. He could not win any of the four singles played. Brazil were finally eliminated in the semi-finals with 0-5 against Switzerland .
