Marcelo Filippini (born August 4, 1967 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan tennis player .

Life

Filippini became a professional tennis player in 1987 and won his first tournament on the ATP Tour the following year in Båstad . He also won at the side of Carlos di Laura at the tournament in Palermo . In 1989 he won his second individual title in Prague .

1990 was his most successful year; he was a finalist in Itaparica and reached the semi-finals in Båstad, Sanremo and San Marino . Although he could not book a tournament victory, he reached position 30, his highest ranking in the world rankings . In 1996 he played at the tournament in Casablanca against Alberto Berasategui, one of the longest games in the history of the ATP World Tour; it went through debut 20 times and lasted a total of 28 minutes.

Filippini won five ATP singles titles, five more times he was in a final. He also won three double tournaments. His best result in a Grand Slam tournament in individual, he achieved in 1999 at the French Open by reaching the quarter-finals. As a qualifier he defeated Greg Rusedski , among others , before losing to the eventual champion Andre Agassi .

Filippini played for the Uruguayan Davis Cup team between 1985 and 2001 . His record: 31:22 in singles and 11:14 in doubles. He was able to reach the first round of the world group three times with Uruguay; In 1990 the team was eliminated against Mexico , in 1992 against the Netherlands and in 1994 against Austria .

At the 1986 South American Games in Chile , he won bronze in singles and gold in doubles alongside Nicolás Zurmendi . In 1995 he represented his home country at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata and won the silver medal. He also took part in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta ; he was Uruguay's flag bearer there at the opening ceremony, in the competition he was defeated in the second round to Renzo Furlan .
