Di Laura attended Pepperdine University , for which he competed in doubles and was able to win the NCAA double title alongside Kelly Jones . At the 1984 Summer Olympics , he took part in the demonstration tournaments for players under the age of 21, but in which no medals were awarded. In 1985 he became a professional tennis player and initially played on the ATP Challenger Tour , where he won his first tournament in 1986 in Porto Alegre . He also won on the side of the Swede Ronnie Båthman in the double competition of Messina .
In the same year he stood for the first time in a double final of an ATP tournament . His first of a total of three tournament wins in doubles he achieved in 1987 on the side of Javier Sánchez . His best individual result at Grand Slam tournaments was qualifying for the first round of the 1986 French Open . In 1989 he reached the semi-finals of the French Open with Ronnie Båthman. By participating in the semi-finals, he improved this year to position 29 in the double world rankings. It had its highest individual rating in 1986 at position 92.
Di Laura played eleven singles and 14 doubles games for the Peruvian Davis Cup team between 1981 and 1993 . With two exceptions, his doubles partner was always Jaime Yzaga .
In 1981, 1982 and 1983 he won the Peruvian tennis championship in individual competition.
