The ATP tournament Sanremo (officially Sanremo Open , and San Remo Open ) is a former men's tennis tournament , which in 1990 unique in the Italian Sanremo was held. The game was played outdoors on clay courts. The event took place in late July / early August. Along with the tournaments in Palermo , Bologna , Florence , Genoa and Rome, it was one of six Italian clay court tournaments in the 1990 season, and later there will never be so many tournaments on Italian soil; today only the Rome Masters is part of the ATP Tour . The Sanremo Open were part of the ATP World Series , the predecessor series of the ATP World Tour 250 .

From 2002 to 2010 another men's tennis tournament was held in Sanremo, the Sanremo Tennis Cup . Like the Sanremo Open, the tournament was played on outdoor clay courts and was part of the ATP Challenger Tour . One of the winners of this tournament was the later world number one Novak Đoković .
