Furlan became a professional tennis player in 1988 and won his first Challenger tournament two years later in Tampere . The following year he won his first challenger tournament in doubles alongside Omar Camporese . In 1992 he was in the final of an ATP tournament for the first time in Bologna . There followed two more finals before he was able to win his first ATP title in Casablanca in 1994 ; his second and last tournament victory followed that same year. His only finals in the doubles competition he had in 1994 on the side of Jordi Arrese in San Marino . He achieved his best scores in the ATP world rankings in 1996 with position 19 in singles and in 1991 with position 193 in doubles.
His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament he achieved in 1995 at the French Open with the quarter-finals, in which he was defeated by Sergi Bruguera . In the doubles competition he was only able to qualify once, but at the Australian Open of the same year he failed in the second round.
Furlan played 19 individual games for the Italian Davis Cup team between 1993 and 2000 . In 1996 and 1997 he and his team reached the semi-finals of the world group, both games were lost. He was able to win one of his two singles each, but lost to Cédric Pioline and Jonas Björkman . Overall, his balance was just positive with 10: 9. At the Olympic Games in 1996 he competed for Italy and reached the quarter-finals, in which he was defeated by the Indian Leander Paes . At the 1992 Olympics , he was eliminated in the third round against Jordi Arrese .
