history
The founding of the city goes back to wealthy Venetians who built summer residences in the hilly landscape. From the 12th century, the fort was built in the north of the city , of which only remains remain. The Museo Civico is now housed in the former watchtower .
Attractions
" Contrada Granda " is the traditional name of the main street in the historic center of Conegliano. It leads from Via XX Settembre via Piazza Cima to Via Beato Marco Ongaro. In addition to numerous palaces, the cathedral and the Scuola dei Battuti can be found here.
The Scuola dei Battuti is inserted between the palazzi of the contrada. The façade stands out with nine pointed arcades and the frescoes by Pozzoserrato (1593) depicting biblical figures and scenes . On the upper floor is the Sala dei Battuti with fresco cycles by Francesco da Milano (1511) and Pozzoserrato (end of the 16th century).
The three-aisled cathedral stands directly behind the scuola. The entrance portal can be found under the arcades.
Also in the historic old town, in Via Cima not far from the cathedral, is the Casa museo di Giovanni Battista Cima , the former home of the painter Cima da Conegliano, a Renaissance building. The Museo degli Alpini is dedicated to the history of the Italian mountaineers .
Sacra Conversazione , panel painting by Cima da Conegliano in the cathedral
