Giovanni Battista Cima (* around 1460 in Conegliano ; † between 1517 and 1518), called Cima da Conegliano , was an Italian painter .

life and work

Giovanni Battista Cima was born in Conegliano , now part of the Province of Treviso . His father was a cloth cutter ( cimatore ), hence the family's nickname Cima .

Sources about Cima's life and artistic career are sparse. In Conegliano's tax files there is a document from 1473, according to which a certain Joannes Cimador became taxable under the laws of the Serenissima when he reached the age of 14 . From this, the research deduces a date of birth between 1459 or 1460.

The first painting signed and dated by Cima dates from 1489, when he ran a workshop in Venice and accepted several orders for altarpieces. Between 1500 and 1515, in addition to Venice, he also worked for clients in Reggio Emilia, Parma and Bologna. In the summer of 1516, Cima returned to Conegliano, where he died between 1517 and 1518.

Altarpiece in Madonna dell'Orto in Venice

Cima was an extraordinarily prolific painter. In addition to the polyptiches in the Vivarini tradition, some of which were set in extremely splendid frames , he painted a large number of altarpieces, often in the form of the Sacra Conversazione , small-format devotional images , including numerous depictions of the Madonna and Child, and occasionally of rich Collectors of the time commissioned pictures with themes from Greek mythology . Are the polyptychs still strong in the traditional style of the Vivarini oriented, so make during his time in Venice the models Antonello regarding the technique of oil painting and the intensity and delicateness of colors, as well as Bartolomeo Montagna , Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione in terms of the atmospheric dense landscaping and the attention to detail in the representation of nature and architecture are noticeable. Albrecht Dürer , who stayed in Venice in 1505 and 1506 and was greatly appreciated by his Italian painter colleagues, could also have inspired Cima in his conception of nature and landscape. The outsourcing of the personnel of a Sacra Conversazione to nature, which had already begun with Bellini, is further developed by Cima, who sets up the Madonna and the accompanying saints in capriccio-like fantasy architecture and the open landscape.

His works can be viewed in Parma, Venice, Conegliano, Paris, Strasbourg, Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Lisbon, San Francisco, Washington, London, Dresden and Berlin, among others.
